Construction Notes
The pattern repeat is 8 stitches × 8 rounds.
This design can be adapted into a skirt, dress, top, or poncho by adjusting the starting circumference and desired length.
For a skirt, dress, or top with an elastic waistband, begin by creating the elastic casing.
For a poncho, skip the elastic casing and begin directly with the main lace pattern.
⸻
Sizing & Measurements
Measure the circumference of the area where you’d like the garment to sit.
Examples:
• Skirt → fullest part of the hips
• Top or dress → desired bust circumference
• Poncho → desired neckline opening
Your starting chain must be divisible by 8.
Example shown:
37 in (94 cm) hip circumference
112 chains (14 repeats)
⸻
Foundation
Chain the required number of stitches.
Join with a slip stitch, making sure the chain is not twisted.
If you’re making a skirt, dress, or top with an elastic waistband, continue to the Elastic Casing section.
If you’re making a poncho, skip the Elastic Casing and continue directly to the Main Pattern.
⸻
Elastic Casing
Work 2 rounds of double crochet.
Round 1
Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
Work 111 dc around.
Join with a sl st.
⸻
Round 2
Repeat Round 1.
After completing both rounds, fold the fabric evenly in half so the stitches align.
The following round will be worked through both layers simultaneously, creating a tunnel for the elastic waistband.
⸻
Main Pattern
Round 1
Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
Work 111 dc evenly around, inserting your hook through both layers of the folded casing.
Join with a sl st.
⸻
Round 2
Ch 1.
Work 1 sc before the next dc.
Work 1 sc after the same dc.
Ch 3.
Skip the next 3 dc.
Work 1 sc before the next dc.
Work 1 sc after the same dc.
Ch 3.
Repeat around.
Join with a sl st into the first sc.
⸻
Round 3
Move back into the first ch-3 space and work 1 sc.
Ch 3.
Work 3 dc into the next ch-3 space.
Ch 3.
Into the following ch-3 space work:
• sc
• ch 2
• sc
Ch 3.
Work 3 dc into the next ch-3 space.
Repeat around.
Finish with:
• sc
• ch 2
Join with a sl st.
⸻
Round 4
Work 1 sc into the small ch-2 space.
Ch 3.
Work into the group of 3 dc:
• 2 dc into the first stitch
• 1 dc into the second stitch
• 2 dc into the third stitch
Ch 3.
Work 1 sc into the next small ch-2 space.
Ch 3.
Repeat around.
Note:
At the end of the round, work the fifth dc only partially, leaving 2 loops on the hook.
Insert the hook into the first sc of the round, work another partial dc, then pull through all 3 loops.
This shifts the beginning of the next round for a cleaner pattern alignment.
⸻
Round 5
Ch 3 (counts as first dc).
Work:
• 1 dc into the first stitch
• 1 dc into the second stitch
• 1 dc into the third stitch
Ch 5.
Work 1 dc into the same third stitch.
Then work 2 more dc into the remaining stitches of the shell.
Each shell consists of:
• 3 dc
• ch 5
• 3 dc
Repeat this sequence around.
At the end of the round, work 5 dc. The sixth dc is represented by the initial turning chain.
Join with a sl st into the third turning chain.
⸻
Round 6
Work 1 sc into the joining point.
Ch 1.
Into each ch-5 space work:
(1 dc, ch 1) × 6
Into the space between shell groups work:
• 1 sc
• ch 1
Repeat around.
Join with a sl st.
⸻
Round 7
Move with slip stitches into the first ch-1 space after the first dc of the fan (3 slip stitches total).
Into this space work:
• ch 3
• 2 partially completed dc
• yarn over and pull through all 3 loops (dc3tog)
Ch 2.
Into the next ch-1 space work another dc3tog.
Ch 2.
Continue across the fan until you have 5 petals.
After completing the fifth petal:
Ch 1.
Begin the next flower immediately over the next fan.
Repeat around.
Join with a sl st into the top of the first petal.
⸻
Round 8
Move with slip stitches into the first ch-2 space of the flower.
Ch 3 (counts as first dc).
Ch 2.
Into the next ch-2 space work:
• 1 dc
• ch 2
Repeat into each ch-2 space across the flower.
Skip the joining point between flowers and continue directly into the first ch-2 space of the next flower.
Repeat around.
Join with a sl st into the third turning chain.
⸻
Round 9
Ch 3 (counts as first dc).
Work:
• 2 dc into every ch-2 space
• 1 dc into every dc
Repeat around.
Example shown in the tutorial:
168 stitches total.
Check that your stitch count remains divisible by 8, so the pattern repeat stays aligned.
Join with a sl st.
⸻
Repeat
Repeat Rounds 2–9 until you reach your desired length.
The sample skirt shown in the tutorial was made with 2 pattern repeats.
⸻
Final Round
Work 1 round of single crochet evenly around the entire skirt.
⸻
Inserting the Elastic
Measure the elastic around the area where you plan to wear the skirt and cut it to size.
Using an elastic threader (or a safety pin), feed the elastic through the casing created at the beginning of the project.
Tie or sew the elastic securely, then hide the ends inside the casing.
⸻
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Lightly wet the finished piece and shape it by hand. Allow it to dry completely before wearing.
