CROCHET HALTER NECK TOP — VIDEO TUTORIAL & PATTERN
Construction
Worked flat as one continuous piece, then seamed at the back.
The body is visually divided into 4 equal sections to guide shaping.
⸻
Materials
• 6 mm crochet hook
• Yarn:
• Main yarn: 100% wool — approx. 2 skeins (3.5 oz / 194 yds - 100 g / 177 m)
• Optional: thin yarn with sequins (held together with main yarn)
• Stitch marker
• Measuring tape
• Yarn needle
• 1 button (for neck band)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
• ch — chain
• sl st — slip stitch
• hdc — half double crochet
• hdc blo — half double crochet back loop only
• st(s) — stitch(es)
• inc — increase
• dec — decrease
⸻
Measurements
You will need:
• Waist circumference
• Length from underarm (where the top starts) to desired hem
• Neck circumference
Calculating section width
Take your waist circumference minus 1 inch, then divide by 4.
Example:
(27 in – 1 in) ÷ 4 = 6.5 in
Each section will be worked to this width.
⸻
Stitch Pattern
• Entire top is worked in half double crochet through the back loop only (hdc BLO).
• Turn after each row.
• No shaping at the bottom edge — all shaping happens at the top edge only.
⸻
Step 1: Foundation
Chain to the desired top length (measured from underarm to hem).
Example:
11 in = 40 ch
⸻
Step 2: Main Body (One Continuous Piece)
Section 1 — Straight
Work hdc BLO without any increases or decreases until the width of this section matches your calculated section width.
Example:
6.5 in = 16 rows
⸻
Section 2 — Increase
Increase in the last stitch of the row at the top edge (same side every row).
• Work 14 rows with 1 increase at the top edge of each row.
• Then work 2 rows straight (no increases).
This creates the center area where the neck band will attach.
Total rows in this section: 16

⸻
Section 3 — Decrease
• Work 2 rows straight.
• Then decrease at the top edge every row for 14 rows.
Total rows in this section: 16
⸻
Section 4 — Straight
Work 16 rows straight, no increases or decreases.

⸻
Step 3: Join the Back
Fold the piece with right sides facing.
Join the back edges with slip stitches (or sew with a yarn needle) along the full length to form a tube.
Fasten off.
Step 4: Neck band
Neck band measurements
Neck band length = neck circumference – 2 in
(The neck band will stretch.)
Example:
12 in – 2 in = 10 in
Neck band height
8 stitches tall (adjust if desired).
Foundation + button loop (made in the foundation chain)
Button loop is formed in this same chain:
1. Ch 4
2. Ch 5
3. Insert hook into the 4th chain from the start (the last of the first 4 chains) and sl st to form a small ring (the ring is made from those 5 chains)
4. Then continue: Ch 4 (so the total neck band height remains 8)
You now have a neck band foundation that is 8 chains tall, with a center button-loop ring.
Neck band rows
Work in hdc BLO, turning each row.
Repeat rows until the neck band reaches the needed length.
Example: 24 rows.
Attach neck band + button
Sew the neck band to the center top of the body (the flat “center” area between shaping).
Sew the button opposite the loop.
Finishing
• Fasten off
• Weave in all ends
